Dead Social Profiles Suck.

July 6, 2010
I'm speaking at the Blackanomics Meetup this Friday, July 9th. I'll be giving a rundown of Twitter do's and don'ts for business - paying particular attention to my pet peeve: the dead profile. What's a dead profile, you ask? It's a profile that is hyped on the company website, where you're encouraged to "connect" with them. Then when you get to their profile you find: a) four tweets, all on the same day, six months ago; b) a million automated tweets from a long-forgotten API; or c) occasional tweets right up until two months ago.

If you're going to lie to current and potential customers about your social media presence, just don't bother. Consider this. Have you ever walked into a store during regular business hours and there are absolutely no associates around anywhere? If you're like me, you turn around and walk right back out, because they don't need your money, obviously. Well, that's the same thing as promoting your dead profile. Please don't do that. Sooo...

That bugs me too. Especially when someone follows me and I click the link to see who they are and they have a "dead" profile. Meanwhile, it looks like their mission for the day is to follow 100 random people in hopes of some hits. Very insincere marketing effort.
